We're at nearly 10,000 feet — do we really have pest problems up here?

Yes, though the mix is different than lower elevations. Rodents are the dominant pest concern in Fairplay — deer mice and pack rats move into homes, garages, and outbuildings as temperatures drop, which at this elevation can happen as early as August. Carpenter ants are active in spring and summer in pine construction. Flying insects are less of a year-round problem than at lower elevations, but wasp nests still establish under eaves and in ground cavities during the short warm season.

Why do I keep finding mice even after setting traps all winter?

Traps address the mice inside the structure but don't stop new mice from entering. In Fairplay's climate, pressure from outside is continuous from September through April. Without sealing the entry points they're using, trapping becomes an ongoing effort rather than a solution. A rodent exclusion inspection identifies the gaps, cracks, and penetrations that are letting them in — sealing those is what ends the cycle.

Do I have voles or mice damaging my lawn and garden beds?

Both are common in South Park. Voles create surface runways and damage root systems beneath snow cover — you see the evidence in spring when the snow melts. Mice primarily enter structures rather than staying in the yard. If you're seeing tunneled runways through dead grass in spring, that's voles. If you're finding droppings inside the garage or shed, that's mice. The two problems require different approaches, and correctly identifying which you have is the starting point.
