Our property is on several acres in South Park — is that more or less pest pressure than a neighborhood home?

More, in most respects. Larger rural properties in the Jefferson and Como area border the habitat where deer mice, pack rats, voles, and ground squirrels live year-round. There's no buffer of neighboring homes reducing wildlife pressure. Outbuildings, equipment storage, wood piles, and hay storage all create harborage that draws rodents close to the main structure. We have a cabin that's empty most of the year — what should we expect when we open it?

In the Jefferson and Como area, seasonally vacant properties often show signs of rodent activity when opened in spring. Deer mice may nest in wall voids, under cabinetry, and in stored soft goods. Are there ground squirrels burrowing near our foundation or driveway?

Wyoming ground squirrels are common throughout South Park, including the Jefferson and Como corridor. Their burrow systems can undermine driveways, retaining walls, and foundation perimeters over time. They're most active May through July. Management of burrowing rodents near structures is governed by Colorado Department of Agriculture regulations for certain control methods — working with a licensed operator keeps you on the right side of state rules.
